Cygnar Sentinel, shield guarding your Warcasters

With the most recent errata having change Shield Guard to be more useful, I wanted to get the Sentinel painted up, ready for use with the low-ARM casters like Kara and Caine.  Not too much to discuss regarding the painting here, pretty standard for my Cygnar techniques, except for the top of the chassis.  For me, painting the circular highlights on the top of the shoulders is insanely difficult, to the point where I can’t seem to accomplish it.  I certainly made attempts with both the Charger and Lancer and I made multiple attempts on this one.  Without much success I instead turned the problem upside down.  Rather than base-coating with the mid-tone (Cygnar Blue Base), I base coated with the highest highlight (a mix of Cygnar Blue Highlight and Frostbite).  Then I layered all the darker colors up to it instead, as shading around a circle is much easier than highlighting out from one.  I can’t really explain why that is, but there you have.  This was a big experiment for me and I had my doubts, but it turned out great.  The only thing I would change is to have based with straight Frostbite instead, to give it an even brighter highlight.

Arlan Stragewayes: Completed

July 31st, 2012

Captain Arlan Strangewayes

This may be the fastest I ever painted a model.  Good practice with the upcoming painting challenge.  I had already started Arlan before I heard learned of the challenge, so I wanted to get him done before the challenge began.  I’m pleased with how he came out, though as usual the highlighting with frostbite got chalky on me.  I painted details on Arlan’s gauges.  First time I’ve tried that.  Menoth White Highlight background, Skorne Red pie slice and a Thamar Black needle.  I like them, they add a little something to him, more than just leaving them blank, certainly.  Might be interesting to add a thin brown glaze and let it collect heavier at the bottom, to give a dirty/oily feel the gauges, like the glasses need to be wiped clean.

Arlan Strangewayes: WIP #1

July 24th, 2012

Yeah, I know, I said I wanted to paint something different (i.e. non-Cygnar Blue) and yet here’s Mr. Strangewayes.  I had some spare-time and he was already primed, so I decided to paint him instead.  Next, though, next will be something different…probably.  Maybe.  I really want to paint the Rangers, actually, but they weren’t primed.

Arlan Strangewayes’ face and metals based

Decided to lay down the metal bases then work on Arlan’s face.  His left eye came out great on the second try (white was too watery the first attempt).  His right eye, however, took four or five tries at least.  Part of it was the wrench was a bit in the way, but mainly it’s just an odd shape and angle.  Looking at the studio painted version’s right eye, I feel better about how well mine came out.

Stormwall: Completed

July 16th, 2012

After a big push at the end of last week, I completed the Stormwall.  This was a learning experiences, just as with the first time I painted a ‘jack or a group of infantry.  Painting a colossal is a unique experience.  In the end it’s not that it’s more work because there is more surface area, rather it’s more work because there are more details.  It’s not like PP just took an existing heavy warjack and scaled it up, these colossals have more details than any previous model and it really takes a while to get it all right.
