Gorman Di SeaWulfe – WIP #1
Let me interrupt my usual stream of Cygnarans and Trollbloods to present a special project from PG_oxyguy: Gorman Di SeaWulfe. Think regular Gorman Di Wulfe crossed with a pirate:
As you can see my first thought was I needed a base that looked like ship decking. Thankfully I had a leftover wood floor base that I had used for pCaine, from Enigma Miniatures. This is a one-piece model so after cutting off the base tab and straightening his wilting dagger, we was ready to base. I pinned his foot and drilled a suitable hole for the bottom of his peg leg and that’s provided a solid attachment to the base.
As for style direction, all I was told was to include purple, to match the rest of PG_oxyguy’s army. There’s a lot of surfaces on this guy. He’s got two capes, a shirt, a jacket, paints, a boot, peg leg, hat, gloves… Need to make a lot of choices here. When it comes to making up a color scheme I like to block in the different areas with base coats alone to see how they all work together. It’s a lot faster to change a base coat than to waste time shading and highlighting before realizing a bad choice.
All right, so purple is my only art direction so lets take that massive cape and make it purple (Beaten Purple). A matching purple hat looks good. Make that little top cape black, black and purple work well together. Now, what about the front?
Purple for the inside of cape, right? Mmm, that’s a lot of purple. Too much purple, perhaps. So what about a white interior (Menoth White Base), that looks nice. Really make the front of the model pop. Gorman is all about the black, so I make the coat black. But the front still needs purple, so the insides of the jacket are purple (lapels, tail, cuffs). That leaves the shirt beneath the coat. Rather than pick out yet another color, we’ll match up the white shirt with the interior of the cape. The pants could be black, but I think some grey would add some additional variety and being a neutral color the eyes won’t focus on it as an additional color distraction.
So now with the base colors blocked in, it’s time to shade and highlight. And of course I’ve chosen black and white, two of the hardest colors to shade and highlight. My challenge is ahead.
