Madrak1 Repose: WIP #1
Madrak is such an interesting character: he aims to unite the Kriels, while being tied to an axe that will end the world. His prime incarnation has seen two sculpts, both of them awful, in my opinion. Let’s take a look at the studio sculpt and pose for both incarnations of Madrak1:
I have two issues with the resculpt pose. First it isn’t at all clear what he is doing. With his foot atop that rock he appears to be standing still, looking over the battlefield perhaps. But then his arms suggest he is striding toward something. And I don’t know what he’s doing with the talisman. Kind of looks like he’s about to throw it on the ground or shove it down someone’s throat. The second issue is it’s very 2-dimensional. Not as bad as Harlan Versh, Ryan (B13th) or other one-piece models, but he still is pretty flat.
Given my limited experience with reposing and modeling, I wanted to do something simple to correct these two problems. Since his arms are separate, that was the logical place to attack. Leaving his legs the same decided the “What is he doing” question, he’s got his foot on rock surveying the battle. To break up the 2-D feel, I the cut the axe arm at the elbow and pinned it so the axe crosses in front of his body (point out into the third-dimension that was lacking). The other arm I’ve pinned in a lowered position so he is clutching it, ready to use its power.
Next I need to sculpt and elbow and a shoulder.
