Earthborn Dire Troll
This is a great looking model with a remarkably dynamic pose. Assembling this was my first experience filling massive gaps. It’s amazing how poorly the pieces fit together. Coming from Cygnar I’ve never had such gaps. I think part of that comes from warjacks having natural locations for pieces to come apart as robots are expected to have linear separations for joints, armor plates, etc. Living warbeasts on the other hand are expected to be one continuous surface (skin!), so there will be no ideal place for the model to come apart. Still, pieces that fit together would have been great.
I realized after I had him primed that I technically put the left hand on upside down compared to the studio model. I quickly tried the studio pose with my own arms and it seems really awkward and doesn’t make much sense. So I’m glad I assembled it like this.
This model was a blast to paint. A nice change of pace from painting ‘jacks. For the rocks on his skin I went with a quick base/wash/dry-brush. The skin I did two-brush blending. I think I could have gone darker in the skin shadows, so that’s something to think about for future models. The teeth/tusks came out better than I expected, along with his nails. The eyes I put pupils on and they came out well. However I notice some trolls seem to have pupils and some do not. I’m not sure what the pattern for that is, but I think he looks good with regular eyes.
In place of the standard leather loin cloth I decided to make it match eDoomie’s tartan pattern. Were I to have another that would be another way to distinguish them, aside from different colored rocks.
As with eDoomie, I went with the swamp-forest base using a variety of materials that I listed there. In addition I added some realistic water and water effects to this base. I tried to go for splashing water around the broken rock he has hit with his fist. Not a rousing success, but I can work on it more as I desire.
