Dire Troll Mauler
The amount of personality exuded by this sculpt is amazing, while still remaining dynamic. I believe I purchased this before the new Dire Troll plastic kit became available which is fine by me as the new sculpt isn’t nearly as impressive. This was the last of the battlegroup I painted and I tried to learn a bit from the EBDT and bring the shades darker and highlights a higher to give more overall contrast. I think I did an okay job, but more contrast is still to be had.
Kept the swampy base theme going with the swamp tufts, mixed field grass, meadow flock and dark leaf scatter. Underneath all that I used a blend of PVA glue, sand and sawdust to make a thick paste that dries into something that looks like mud but is very hard. When applying it I put it on clumpy to ensure it will dry with lots of depressions and interesting features. These are then filled with realistic water and the rest of the base it gloss-coated to give it a wet feeling.
As with the EBDT I replaced the leather loin cloths with the tartan pattern from my eDoomie, trying to tie the battlegroup together. You get a good look at the rocks protruding from his skin here. I’m disappointed with these, I had hoped for something closer to the studio look, but I didn’t get them dark enough at the base.
