Painting Challenge: Day 27
Lola was constantly on the move, cutting back and forth, taking out great swaths of thralls, ‘jacks and anything else that got in the way of the great axe. The destruction put forth by the Butcher’s battlegroup was limited only by how fast they could swing their weapons and fists, but the numbers were beginning to shift against them. Orsus’ grip on his sanity was starting to loosen as the rage swept over him. His arcane abilities had been waxing and waning during the early battle, but as we began to wade through the undead, his rage brought him arcane clarity. His ‘jacks were feeding off his rage, hitting more surely and moving more quickly. Still it wasn’t enough to stem the tide. A shrill scream from the North attracted Orsus’ attention. A woman had been grabbed by a Helljack, it was carrying her back into the woods. The woman screamed and hit the ‘jack with her fists, kicking and twisting to get free. She was one of the civilians, a young archaeologist, a young woman, innocent of all but being in the wrong place during a time of war. Her screams began to echo in the Orsus’ mind. The echoes stretched back in time to another scream. “Lola…”, he uttered through gritted teeth.
A red curtain of rage fell over the Butcher’s vision. He cleaved through three mechanithralls with one swing and felt is arcane power surge. The Savage let out a vicious snort, pulling the remains of a Helljack from his axe. He charged the would-be kidnapper ‘jack from the north as the Butcher converged from the south. As he moved through the sea of enemies, the Butcher cut them down, even as the Savage Beast trampled enemies under his feet. Lola came down hard, severing an black metal arm and freeing the woman, as the Savage’s axe cut the head clean off the ‘jack.
The woman lay on the ground, as terrified of her savior has she was of her captor. The Butcher looked down at her. As a bullet passed close to Butcher, he turned to see a scrap thrall Explode several feet away. The kapitan nodded briefly as he kept firing into the crowd, picking his targets and rarely missing.
“Run,” The Butcher growled to the woman. “RUN!”
He turned back into the melee, his rage continuing to build. As the Doom Reavers and his ‘jacks slaughtered the undead he felt his rage building. There was as slight pause as the forest stopped disgorging ‘jacks and scrap thralls. A chill emanated from the darkness, then the bane knights spilled forth. As they closed on the Khadoran forces, weary from the slaughter, the Butcher’s rage erupted. The knights expected to get the charge on the Khadorans, who were still struggling through the last of the ‘jack fodder. They were wrong.
Completed both the Ternion and the Escort. I don’t know why, but I did not enjoy painting these guys. Normally I enjoy painting warrior models more than jacks, but something about these guys was just wearing on me. But they are done at last and in record time. Speaking of records, I managed to paint all of their eyes first try, which for me is unheard of, normally I need at least a couple tries per figure, but I was having an exceptionally steady-handed night and got them all done well.
The cloaks I actually did while I painted the greens on the Kodiak. Since I already had it all mixed up I just assembly-lined them in along with the ‘jack. They came out decent, but as usual the lightest highlights could be better, something for me to keep working and improving on.
A lot of details on these guys, a lot of different colors, too, thanks partially to my FBL scheme. For the fur I used the same colors as I did for eButcher to try and keep them tied in. I also used more Greatcoat Grey on these guys for their paints, after all they are Greylords, need some grey somewhere.
The Greylord Escort, also known as the Doom Reaver UA is very similar to the Ternion, which makes sense since they are all Greylords.
I gave him grey hair instead of black to try and make him seem older and different than the ternion, though keeping it distinguished form the white/grey fur was a challenge. The blending on the red cloak didn’t come out great, definite gradiant lines there.
For the staff I went with the same colors as the Doom Reaver fell blades to tie him in with the rest of his unit.
So I’m at 25/35 pts, just the Spriggan remains for the final 10pts. And 4 days to go. It’s going to be a close one.
