Painting Challenge: Day 20
A man sat in the corner of his cell, knees drawn up, head down, almost asleep. It was in this state, between waking and sleeping that he could almost remember…. Vague memories would surface and drift away like whiffs of smoke on the breeze.
“Nastasja…,” the man whispered as a woman’s face surfaced. “I have missed you.” His voice, even in whisper was broken and hoarse. He was so rarely able to speak Khadoran. Her mouth opened to speak, but a dreadful moan erupted instead. Her face twisted in agony and fell back amidst countless other pained faces. The great blade was watching him.
“No, not yet.” He mumbled, trying to remain in his semi-dream state, but he could not fight the clawing sleep that was overcoming him. The feeling of falling thrust him awake and he jumped to his feet. The Fell Blade chained to his wrist clattered against the wall and floor. It spoke to him in a hundred Orgoth voices, tormenting him, enraging him.
“Rest now.” A gravelly voice spoke from outside the door of his cage. Orsus stood looking in at the man. “We will fight soon.”
The language was incomprehensible to the Doom Reaver but he felt strangely at ease in the presence of this large man. The Doom Reaver whispered something in Orgoth as he came closer to the door. Lowering his voice he began to rant in the ancient, dark language.
“Rest now.” Orsus reiterated, raising a hand to silence the Doom Reaver. The Doom Reaver went back to his corner and sat.
The hall was dimly lit by the flickering of two fireplaces, one at each end of the building. They took the chill from the night air, but the hall was still uncomfortably cold. Both sides of the long hall were lined with metal bars. Were they housing men they might be called cells. But these were no longer men, these were caged animals.
A Greylord entered the hall and approached Orsus.
“Kommander, can I assist you with something?” The expression on the Greylord’s face made it clear the Kommander was not welcome here. No one was to visit the Doom Reavers, save the Greylords.
Orsus ignored the Greylord, both his question and his existence. He held his gaze on the Doom Reaver, then silently left the hall. The Greylord hurried out behind him, watching Zoktavir walk past his quarters, out of the camp, enveloped by the darkened forest. The last he saw was a glint of light from Lola’s sharpened blade.
“It has been three days, Captain. He is not coming back.” The Greylords’ expressions were a mixture of frustration and relief. “We will not get another warcaster to replace him.”
“Until I receive orders otherwise, this camp will continue preparations for Kommander Zoktavir and his battle group.” The captain stated forcefully.
A shriek from outside left little doubt The Butcher had returned. His axe and hands were covered in blood. Three skulls hung from Lola, tied by their hair. He wore the look of a raging beast that had worn itself to exhaustion. He was bleeding from a cut across the top of his skull. One of the civilians employed for the Orgoth excavation lay unconscious on the ground, fainted, two others trying to revive her. The Butcher did not break stride on the way to his quarters. His door slammed shut leaving a fragile silence over the camp.
It’s practically an unwritten rule that you can’t run an eButcher list without at least one unit of Doom Reavers. With is his tier list, in fact, Doom Reavers become FA:U, and an army composed of nothing but eButcher, Doom Reavers and a Berserker for WJ points is not unheard of. Within the time limits of this challenge, and because I only own one unit, eButcher will have to make due with just 6 Reavers.
I really like how the blades turned out on these guys. I went with the green Fell blades, like the studio version of Fenris because they pop a lot more than the red blades the studio Doom Reavers carry. I also went with the standard Khadoran Greatcoat Grey for the cloth at their wastes. The studio version makes it out to be leather, but I think it’s a lot more interesting to think that these are the remnants of the uniforms once worn by the Reavers. From the fluff we know that most reavers are former military who disobeyed orders, so it’s more meaningful if they’re out their bearing what’s left of the uniform while losing what’s left of their humanity.
I have continued my pace of one item per week which is going to leave me out of time if it continues. Realistically I need to finish both the Kodiak (who is up next) and the Spriggan this week. That leaves me only a few days to try and do the Ternion and the Doom Reaver UA. It’s not looking good.
