Painting Challenge: Day 13
The captain rose early the next morning and made straight for the Kommander’s quarters carrying a breakfast tray. While he was not envious of being the camp liaison to Kommander Zoktavir, he knew it was safest to isolate The Butcher from the rest of the men. As he approached the newly built quarters he noticed the door was left open. He cautiously entered setting the tray on the table. Through the open door came sounds of a heated argument which had escalated to shouting. The captain sprinted to the mechaniks workshop. Zoktavir, Battle axe in hand, had three mechaniks backed against the rear wall, blocking the door to the cellar. The mechaniks brandished large wrenches and pipes as weapons, hoping to somehow defend themselves.
“Kommander, what is going on here?” the captain hurried to put himself between Zoktavir and his men.
“He wants the Savage, Captain.” One of the junior mechaniks spoke up. “We told him it was not possible. No one is allowed access to it.”
“I will have that ‘jack.” Zoktavir roared as he pressed forward. The captain needed to diffuse this quickly.
“Access to that ‘jack has been restricted, Kommander. This particular one is one of the earliest Beast ‘jacks. Extraordinarily aggressive in battle, he was given the nickname ‘Savage Beast’. However, during periods of inactivity we use the jacks for labor around the camp. While felling some trees, this one turned on the mechanik that was working with him. It killed him before rampaging into the camp. It killed four more men before running out of coal. Since that awful day, it’s been chained up in the cellar, awaiting a new cortex. Being so far out on the fringes, however, our request has gone unfulfilled.”
“I will take the ‘jack,” Zoktavir rumbled loudly at the Captain. “It will not be a problem.”
“Of course Kommander, as you wish. We will get it ready for you.” The captain acquiesced. Satisfied, Zoktavir turned and left the building.
“Sir, you cannot give that madman a deranged ‘jack like Savage,” one of the mechaniks protested after the Kommander was gone. “It is too risky.”
“Do you really think we could stop him from taking it?” The captain asked, looking at each man in turn. Quietly they acknowledged the fact, shaking their heads. “Exactly. Now do as I said and get the Savage ready for battle. Fuel it up, but do not fire it’s boiler until Kommander Zoktavir is present. If it goes berserk again, he at least stands a chance of stopping it.”
“Assuming he does not join with it.” One the mechaniks said, voicing everyone’s thoughts.
“Morrow help us if he does.”
Here is Beast 09, done up in Fifth Border Legion colors. I’m sure there must be others out there, but this is the first Beast I’ve seen in the FBL color scheme. I like how it turned out. I was hesitant because I really like the studio scheme for Beast, but keeping with the theme and my fiction I decided to make him FBL. As with the eButcher I did quick two brush blending for the reds and greens, but the Beast also adds in some black, which I also blended. The blending on his red loin plate came out great, but the top red plate doesn’t thrill me. But the challenge must continue!
The ice on the axe was based in Frostbite, washed in Blue Ink then dry brushed with Morrow White. Simple, but effective. The metals are all similar, just a base, a wash and some drybrushing. All of the metal rivets on the green are done with a mix of Pig Iron, Brassy Brass and Brown Ink. It looks great against the green, much better than just silver does.
Not too much going on with the back of this model. For the base I did a simple winter base and added some Army Painter Winter Tufts.
In regards to the painting challenge as a whole: 13 days in and only the second model done. Two models in 13 days is very fast for me, but won’t be enough to finish this challenge in time. It’s not looking good, but I’ll keep going as fast as I can. Next up are the Doom Reavers, so doing a whole unit I don’t expect to pick up much speed.
