Kara Sloan: WIP #1

May 10th, 2012

Little time for painting lately, but in the moments I have found, I’ve been working on my newest Cygnar ‘caster: Kara Sloan. Probably going very close to standard paint scheme on this one, except I’ll use my ‘Jack Bone/Menoth White Highlight color for the white on the dress to make sure she ties in with the rest of my Cygnar forces.

You may recognize this repose from my article over on HCO: Simple Kara Sloan Conversion

I made the base using the technique I read about here: Brush Thralls: Slate Bases

The last few models I’ve done I’ve base coated the entire model first, then gone back for details.  For Kara I’m switching it up and going back to painting each part to completion from inside out.  This is nice as it gives a better feeling of progress and I think I’ll be less likely to miss things.  On the other hand when you make a mistake it takes a lot more effort to correct.

Face and Cygnar blues completed

I started with the hardest to reach area: the face.  It came out okay except for one cheek where a bit of paint dried before I could blend it, leading to some roughness.  I mixed some Murderous Magenta into the flesh color for the lips, but I think it might need to be a little darker to notice from any distance.  The eyes went okay, though her right eye isn’t as crisply outlined as I’d like. Next I decided to do the hair, which I think came out really well.

I then decided to do the Cygnar blues, since the clothing around her neck and chest are tougher to reach.  And as long as I had the colors flowing I decided to hit the few other parts I was going to use Cygnar blue for: the arms, shoes, back and a bit of cloth on the front of her dress.

Back side, some metals base coated

From the back you can see a bit more of the blues and that I based the metal on the boiler, sword and put leather basecoat on the rifle strap and sword handle.  I did a base coat on the strap before starting the blues so that I could get solid coverage without hitting any completed work.
