Long Gunners: Skin and Hair
Progress continues on the Long Gunners, though it doesn’t feel like the end is in sight yet. I had hoped to complete them for the tournament on Saturday but that’s unlikely at this point. So far the base coating is complete, the skin is fully painted , eyes are painted and hair is done.
Working with twelve models simultaneously gives you additional insight into adding variety to a unit. I’ve ended up with 8 Midlund Flesh, 1 Ryn Flesh, 1 Khardic Flesh and 2 Idrian Flesh. On top of that I have 4 blondes, 3 brunettes 2 with black hair, 1 with red hair, 1 with gray and 1 with a light brown. I used Ghool’s hair painting guide over at HCO for a references when painting the different hair colors. For ease of getting the unit done I took some shortcuts. For washing the base coat to add shading I used Devlan Mud. This was my first time with this very popular wash from Citadel. It did a really nice job, especially on the brown hair. I intend to use it for quick shading of the leathers on these guys, so this was a good test. For the highlights I generally mixed Menoth White Highlight with the base color to get a couple lighter shades. For the black hair I used Coal Black and Frostbite to make highlights.
For the Midlunders’ flesh I user Khardic flesh for a shade and Ryn Flesh for a highlight, then washed it Flesh Wash to even it all out a bit. Quick and efficient. For Khardic and Ryn flesh bases I slid up and down the scale as appropriate. For the Idrian flesh I mixed in some Umbral Umber for shading.
Only four of the models have visible eyes, with the rest wearing goggles. I typically do eyes with a stripe of black, stripe of white, dot of black, but for something different I tried a stripe of black and two white dots. I had some success with it and may try it again in the future. (The front line of guys in the photo have their eyes painted.)
Next is on to the painting the goggles, then it will be adding shading and highlighting to the rest of them starting inside out.
