My Completed Squire

Squire - Front

A few pictures of the Squire I finished up a few weeks back.  I thought this would be interesting to post because unlike my other models I’m really not happy with how this one turned out.  I had a lot of issues painting it and getting it mounted.  But if I can learn from my mistakes, I suppose everyone else can too, so might as well show it off along with the better models.

The first thing to catch your eye should be the awful attempt I made at a glow effect around the arcane blue vents on the top sides.  I thought I understood what I was doing, but instead I ended up with a series of tide marks and all much too dark.  I can’t say why it went wrong, but I’ll have to do some further investigation before I attempt that again.

The next biggest problem I had, which is difficult to see in the pictures is that I broke his foot off while mounting it to the base.  Since the feet are so large and only the toes touch the base, I wanted to complete the base before mounting the model.  When it came time to actually get the pins in his feet through the holes in the base they apparently didn’t line up well and my attempt to force the issue compressed his body onto his feet.  Trying to straighten the legs back out resulted in snapping off his left foot.  Now I don’t mean the glue joint at his hip, I mean the solid metal connection to his foot.  I think the way to go here would be to drill the pin holes before working on the base to make it easier to make sure they are lined up.  Then with basing complete I could just clean the holes back out.

And, in case you didn’t know, the metal models are much more bendable that you expect, so be gentle.

Next, I’m not a big fan of how the white sections turned out.  the shading doesn’t look like shading, it just looks like a different color.  The red cross-hair section leaves something to be desired, I’ll have to rethink what that should really look like.

Squire - Right

I had thoughts of redoing this particular model, but after snapping bending his legs and breaking off his foot, I think I’d like to just start with a fresh Squire model.  Also for all my complaints this model looks fine from arms length and on the battlefield you don’t notice any issues with it.  So for now it will be fine as is, but someday I’ll revisit the Squire and use it as a measuring post for how far I’ve made it.
